With the massive economic construction in China, the construction industry is developing rapidly, and the scale of output value is
expanding. How to rely on BIM technology to improve the production management efficiency of the construction industry, in
order to achieve continuous improvement of project management performance in the construction industry, has become the focus of
academic and practical circles at present.
Currently, the Chinese construction industry has encountered a bottleneck in adopting and promoting BIM technology. In recent
years, the promotion and implementation of BIM technology in China have yet to achieve significant results. Compared with the adoption and promotion of BIM technology in foreign countries, although there are encouraging policies at the national and industry levels, the expected effect of the adoption and promotion of BIM technology has yet to be achieved. The common goal of continuous improvement of project management performance in the construction industry under the promotion of this new technology has yet to be realised. This is because there needs to be more theoretical research on the adoption and promotion of BIM technology in the domestic construction industry and the support of BIM technology innovation on construction industry management innovation behaviour. Based on this, research on BIM technology innovation support inducing management innovation behaviour in the construction industry needs to be explored. Therefore, it is crucial for this study to clarify the key factors influencing the adoption of BIM technology in the Chinese construction industry, to explore the impact of BIM technology application on the management innovation behaviour of the construction industry, and to identify the paths of BIM technology adoption and innovation support for the Chinese construction industry based on the research results.
BIM adoption and diffusion is an innovation diffusion research problem. Among them, the TOE (Technology-Organisation-Environment framework) theory as the core of technology adoption diffusion research is an essential research tool in this paper. It is widely believed that the TOE framework theory can be an excellent way to examine and identify the main influencing factors for the adoption and diffusion of new technologies from the perspective of innovation diffusion theory, and this paper constructs the adoption and diffusion implementation path of new technologies based on TOE framework theory. At the same time, BIM technology, as new
information technology in China's construction industry, is used to replace traditional CAD and other technologies, the consequences of which still need to be discovered. What is foreseeable, however, is that its application to construction companies will inevitably bring a high degree of uncertainty. Effective BIM use requires changes to almost every aspect of a company's business and operating model. This process requires emotionally stable, open-minded executives with a certain degree of humane experience to provide a strong "voice" for promoting BIM technology. "This process requires emotionally stable, open-minded executives with a degree of
experience and a level of comfort to provide a strong 'voice' for the roll-out of BIM technology and outward-looking executives to
coordinate the many obstacles encountered in the promotion of BIM technology. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the impact of
executive personality traits on the willingness to use BIM technology in construction companies based on the theory of upper echelons.
Based on the TOE framework theory and the upper echelon theory, this paper gradually investigates the factors influencing the
willingness to adopt BIM technology and then proposes the implementation path of BIM technology adoption and innovation in
the Chinese construction industry. In the meantime, this paper focusses on the following main research lines:
1. Based on the diffusion of innovation theory perspective, the key factors influencing the adoption of BIM technology in the Chinese
construction industry are sorted out based on the TOE framework theory. This paper also continues the previous paradigm of
information technology adoption research. It follows the mainstream research trend of empirically testing the technical, organisational, and environmental influencing factors in the BIM technology adoption model, following the empirical logic of "practice, theory, and practice." This study collects data and conducts specific empirical tests on each item of the conceptual model of BIM
technology adoption factors.
2. Based on the research results on the key influencing factors of BIM technology adoption intention in China's construction industry, and given the inadequacy of existing research in revealing the mechanism of the role of BIM technology innovation support on management innovation behaviour in the construction industry, this study takes into account the specificity of the goal orientation of management innovation behaviour in the construction industry and the high degree of uncertainty and introduces the Big five personalities of executives as the basis of the upper echelon theory. The antecedent variable of willingness to use BIM technology conducts an empirical study on the relationship between different dimensions of executive personality traits and willingness to use BIM technology.
3. Combining the findings of the above two studies, we summarise the implementation path of BIM technology adoption in the Chinese
construction industry and analyse the impact of BIM technology application on the construction industry.
The result shows that: In the technical level, "Relative superiority," "Observability," and "Testability" positively affect the willingness to use BIM technology in architectural firms; At the organisational level, "Expected benefits," "Expertise readiness" positively affect the willingness to use BIM "Strategic inertia" negatively affects the willingness to use BIM technology in architectural firms; In environmental level, "Competitive inertia" negatively affects the willingness to use BIM technology in architectural firms.
Environmental level, "Competitive pressure," "Normative pressure," and "Government support" positively affect the willingness to use
BIM technology in architectural firms; At the executive level, "Competitive pressure," "Normative pressure," and "Government
support" positively affect the willingness to use BIM technology in architectural firms. In architectural enterprises"; At the executive
personality level, "Extraversion " and "Openness to experience" positively affect the willingness to use. Based on the above findings,
this study proposes a pathway for the adoption and promotion of BIM technology in the Chinese construction industry, as well as a pathway for the Chinese construction industry to respond to the adoption of BIM technology.
The theoretical contribution of this study is mainly in the following two aspects: firstly, this paper analyses the key factors influencing
the use of BIM technology in the Chinese construction industry by combining the TOE framework theory to identify the three levels of
influence, i.e., technical, organisational and environmental, and analyses the key influencing factors through literature review. The
framework provides a research pathway of internal and external factors to explain the use of BIM technology. Unlike other previous
studies on technology use, this paradigm examines BIM use from a specific theoretical perspective, such as the institutional perspective level, to reveal the critical success factors of BIM use. The integration of usage factors from different perspectives and the rational, empirical analysis of the propelling and hindering factors of BIM technology usage intentions enriches the theoretical study of BIM technology usage intentions; secondly, this paper extends and revises the traditional technology-organisational-environment theoretical framework (TOE) based on the high-order echelon theory, where previous research on technology usage based on the TOE framework ignored the impact of executive characteristics on technology use intention. This paper incorporates executive personality traits into the TOE framework and uses the well-established Big five personalities scale to study the influence of
executive personality traits on the willingness to use BIM technology, which not only broadens the application scenarios of the upper
echelon theory but also enriches and supplements the previous research on the willingness to use technology based on the TOE
framework.
