The quality of the transportation experience is acknowledged to be a vital aspect for the development of international tourism. Transport can directly influence tourists’ perceptions and their overall evaluation of a holiday destination. Tourists require an
efficient and appealing transportation system that will provide trips to/from touristic destinations, in addition to facilitating adequate on-site mobility. The relationship involving tourism and transport can be investigated from both angles, either from tourism
or transportation standpoints. This researcher chose to depart from a tourism perspective aiming to demonstrate the complexity of the international travellers’ experience in reference to the offered transportation services. To operationalise the potential theory, two
parallel investigations were adopted aiming to capture insights from both the demand and the supply sides. The investigation collected data from international tourists in addition to tourism/transport facilitators in a selected number of destinations. The study ultimately seeks to help destination strategists in planning, promoting and managing transportation services in the Mediterranean region. The aim is to present fresh insights in relation to the domain, captured from the emerged themes that have proved theoretical relevance throughout the study. Such abstracted themes were used to build an integrated transport platform that is suggested to appeal for international tourists’ preferences, expectations and experiences.
The results of the study were interpreted using a qualitative approach. Grounded theory methodology employed as it provides a rich understanding of behaviour processes, motivations and experiences (Strauss & Corbin 1998; Martin, 2007). Data gathered from
the researcher reports and informants’ valuable inputs, were analysed in an inductive approach. Theory developed elevated from the raw expressions and views of participants that were categorised and presented at high level themes. The Storytelling of travellers’
transportation experiences, in addition to experts’ contributions, provided insights to the phenomena that might not be easily captured by the scientific paradigm. The product of the presented investigation is an emerged theoretical framework suggesting the essence of tourism destinations’ transport system.
